Staunch/stanch

Which would you use, were you in the situation of having to use it? ;-)

I imagine I would use "staunch". In American English, I have heard people use both "stanch the flow" and "staunch the flow", however "staunch the flow" strikes me as the more commonly used of the two. A search on COCA seems to confirm my native speaker instinct.
