Dear friends,

Could anyone kindly keep me enlightened as to the slight differences
between the following words:

statue
sculpture
carving

Thanks in advance.

Cordially yours,

Hmmm, tricky, in theory all of these words could apply to the same piece of art, but there are differences in meaning. I would say that a statue usually includes a human figure. a carving is something that has been carved.

  • For example, a statue made of wood which has been carved is also a carving, but a statue cast in bronze is not.
  • Thinking about it further, I think carving is almost always applied to wooden items.

Hello Guest,

Many thanks for your detailed reply.

They really help a lot. This type question seems to be a piece of cake
for a native speaker to make out some differences but appears to
the opposite for a non English speaker.

Thank you anyway.
