Stative verb combination with other verbs

Hi,

I have encountered a series of sentences in a middle school exam prep book. (for non-native speakers)

1) Did you see a beautiful rainbow appear in the sky this afternoon.

2) Before he went to bed, Denny heard someone knocking on the door.

3) Jenny felt someone touch/touching her back.

ok, my question is, why some can use Ving and other can't?

Is there a strict rule or do they differ with different verbs?

Or is the prep book wrong?

How do I teach these?

holyduke How do I teach these? Hopefully you'll receive several suggestions. In my opinion, the three examples (appear, knock, touch) can be used with see/heard/felt in both the infinitive and the participle form.

  • It depends on whether you're describing a single occurrence or a continuous action (or series of actions).
  • If you change the rainbow to a series of lightning bolts, "appearing" seems quite natural.

Any additional help?

I don't know how to even begin explaining these to students and neither do the other teachers I work with. What is the standard answer? Are there any guidelines we can follow? (frankly, i am not sure of the answer myself)
