stative or not

Which would you use and why?

"I'm really loving this Christmas."

"I really love this Christmas."

Top answer

" where loving = enjoying, and therefore non-stative; being used in the progressive aspect for this particular time. " where love = 'extreme like' and therefore stative; being used in the simple aspect indicating something I love/like as a 'general' rule. " Emphasising 'this' in speech; and thereby placing the emphasis on this Christmas as opposed to last Christmas, could also be acceptable.

  • That's what I'd say anyway...
