Statistically speaking

Is it correct tot say “Statistically speaking? Is it used to start a sentence or is it redundant?

Statistically speaking you have a 33%!chance of winning.

I looked it up online and got this response

I don’t understand what “divert responsibility for opinions onto”

Is it correct to use “underlie” this way ?

However, "statistically speaking" is a somewhat clichéd phrase that tends to divert the responsibility for opinions onto the statistical data that supposedly underlays them.

Thank you

anonymous I don’t understand what “divert responsibility for opinions onto” "for opinions" means "for the author's opinions (about whatever subject is being discussed)". anonymous Is it correct to use “underlie” this way ? The text, as you quoted it, uses the verb "underlay", not "underlie".

  • My instinct is that "that supposedly underlays them" is incorrect, and it should be "that supposedly underlies them".
  • However, some dictionaries seem to support this use of "underlay".
