I doubt if many of us go to stationery shops in which we need to speak to anybody these days. We pick up what we want from self-service shops/stores without saying a word, or buy online.

There aren't many stationery shops left in the US. Hallmark Cards sells greeting cards, thank-you notes, stationery and knick-knack gifts.

That's not quite fair. In the UK we do still have WH Smith, Paperchase and Ryman
