I stated to someone...Oh, blah blah just called you. He stated I should say...Blah Blah just called for you. Which is correct?

In informal speech in my area of the U.S. "called for you," usually means someone stopped by to see you, rather than called on the phone. I suspect that interpretation might just be regional.

e.g.,

My brother told me that John called this afternoon and asked that I return his call. (John called on the phone.)

My brother told me that John called for me this afternoon, b
