To The: Admission department,
Dear Sir/Madam:
I am writing to apply for the PhD program on Film formation of latex dispersions in absence of organic solvents / magnetic resonance imaging on drying polymeric films, in which I am enormously interested. I always have a great passion towards science as well as sports, and then I don’t know when I started playing with science. May be during my school days when I had my own homemade electrical & electronics laboratory.
Continuing this passion I follow the path of science and choose Bachelor of Science program, where I found that Physics is not only the ‘universal science’ but has tremendous possibilities to describe governing dynamics of the nature too. I choose the program ‘master of science in physics’ then. Where my faculty members were actively participating in researchers, & hence I had the opportunity to do various small projects on a scale of research level which enhanced my knowledge about research.
I operated sensitive and costly equipment (AFM, XRD, UV-VIS spectrometer, etc.) myself, which increased my confidence that I am capable to work in a research based environment. Another important experience that further instils confidence in me to pursue with a research career is the dissertation (Optical Study of CuSO4 in PVA Doped film) that I produced during my fourth semester.
In that project we have undertaken optical study of CuSO4 .5H2O doped polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) films. PVA is an eco-friendly polymer with good film forming property. CuSO4 is a divalent salt of Copper and shows interesting optical properties. We have investigated the effect of dopant on the optical properties of polymer, particularly the band structure and electronic properties including energy band gap Eg. These modifications give information about the optical, electronic and micro structural behaviour of the polymer.
I had to do a great deal of work in very little time - for instance, preparing many samples (films) of Poly Vinyl Alcohol with different composition of CuSO4.5H2O in the mixture which was a difficult task under available conditions. After forming self-standing films, we tested them through an UV-Vis spectrometer and structural tests through XRD measurements.
Some days I was the only student doing my work late at night with just one goal in mind that I should present a successful seminar at the end of my work. The work was greatly appreciated by my every one including my supervisor (Dr. XXXXXXXX) and examiners too. I reword with an ‘A+’ grade for that. The experience of doing a dissertation gave me a lot of confidence in my abilities, a faith that I have that scientific temper and approach needed to be a researcher.
This I drew me toward the research and later on I worked with another professor Dr. XXXXXX on a project on “positron annihilation”, but simultaneously I got an opportunity to teach Physics in an engineering college, and it shape me up as an advance physics teacher. Just in one and half year I have promoted as Head of the department of Physics. I am a Faculty of Physics, apart from conduction of regular coursework lectures, I also design small research projects, reformed the physics lab, enhanced facilities of learning though industrial collaborations, design a series of inter disciplinary courses, skill development programs for the students, and established an automobile lab under my supervision. As I learn quickly and work with team spirit therefore I develop my entrepreneur skills for the sake of students & to provide a wider scope for my teaching and research abilities.
After establishing a bit myself as a student friendly faculty; I moved back on the track of my passion, & I have successfully enrolled in Doctor Of Philosophy Program after cracking up the DET (Doctoral Entrance Test) & the DRC (Doctoral research committee) interview conducted by the XXXXXXXXXX University - India, work will start very soon.
Right now there is no scholarship or project fellowship avail for me, due to the government norms (on the basis of cast & age). hence if I would like to sustain my passion with scientific research then I not only need to compromise with my job for the entire four year duration of PhD Program; but also I need to pay some of the major amounts time to time to the university along with the purchase of materials for samples, testing/Measurements expenses too & etc. & that will not going to be possible especially for me who left his father & earns at his own. Eventually I need to make a difficult choice between survival and passion for research as important as survival; I am looking optimistically towards the global opportunities therefore.
It’s a well-established fact that XXXXXXX is a country with a perfect environment for every Scientific Ideology that can lead to create a bridge between scientific solutions & social problems as well as hotspot for research, technology, development and manufacturing. It also developed so many world class institutions & “XXXXXXX” is one of them. This has an excellent reputation in both education and research due to well-equipped modern labs, well-versed faculties, excellent staff, student friendly environment & User friendly educational Syllabus design. Having collaboration with some of the efficient local as well as world class research institutes & industries such as the Max Planck Institute and Tata Steel Europe & etc.
As a young leader XXXXXXXX spreading glory among the young scientific community and a member of world class research organisation.XXXXXXXX specially design Programs For PhD students offers a range of opportunities for personal development along with scientific knowledge. Therefore active young scientists assert their potential decisively and implements new ways of solving of various scientific problems.
I am sure that the knowledge I shall receive in The Doctorate of Philosophy program will be able to be applied in the future in order to become a professional; I could help people and student’s teams to develop their own potential, to overcome obstacles and to achieve their goals also to shape them as world class emerging faculties & researchers. That’s why I strive to take part in your educational establishment together with progressive international youth. I aim to join in researching and developing of projects together with the best world academics, Scientists, activists, officials, and leaders in science in order to solve global problems of mankind as well as challenges of emerging scientific world.
Moreover, taking part in The Doctorate of Philosophy program is a perfect chance to develop both my personal and professional experience by interacting with top students and leaders of other nationalities, discovering new culture and traditions. Being an active participant of the India meetings of youth, I know how enriching it is to meet new people, sharing ideas and broadening our horizons beyond a single nation’s vision.
I have great interest in polymer science hence I read a lot (as every science student often does) about ‘mentioned’ techniques of measurement also about the scope of simulation work, before writing the letter for committee’s consideration. Due to my especial inclination towards the subject I read too many papers & articles to develop the topic related understanding. In the effort to reach at any conclusion I prepare notes that covers various aspects & characterization issues about topic. But still I need something that would pointing straight to the topic and then I found report from BASF - The Chemical Company entitled “Closing the Gap between Water and Solvent-borne Anticorrosion; Coatings via New Binder Concepts” written by panel that includes “Oihana Elizalde, Stephan Amthor (BASF SE, Ludwigshafen, Germany), Collin Moore (BASF Corporation, Wyandotte, USA)”.
It also strengthened my thought of understanding the waterborne quoting and its emerging role in various industries. As like new waterborne paint technologies already have been launched (high performance acrylics, epoxy esters, alkyds, zinc rich epoxies, fluoropolymers, polysiloxanes etc). Again through another report based on AERC 2014; 9th Annual European, Rheology Conference - organised by ‘German Rheological Society’; I found a wider range of scientific ideology related to the field. As per the response of this magnitude from various sources of information and my understanding towards subject & particularly towards the topic, my confidence surely has got raised. I humbly claim that I have a decent & clear understanding, desired potential & capabilities to deal with new techniques of measurement as well as analysing methods to perform further research work. The seed has inseminated during my previous research projects is ready to have sun rays & necessary vital nutriments from this PhD program under the supervision of a well-verse & prominent guidance to be able to develop as a banyan tree in the future.
In conclusion, I would like to say that I am eager to gain new experiences, improve my skills and broaden my understanding of the dynamic scientific research based economic world, and I am persuaded that studying in the Doctorate of Philosophy program would contribute to my development as a specialist of international level in the best possible way.
Thank you very much for considering my application.
Yours faithfully,
XXXXXXXXXX

I took a quick look at your letter. I strongly urge you to shorten it considerably. You do not have to describe every experiment, discuss every type of paint, and refer to every article.
