Study Plan

o Goal of study, title or subject of research, and detailed study plan

The goal of my doctoral study at Pusan National University (PNU), South Korea is to deepen my knowledge in naval architecture. I desire to study not only about naval architecture but also the education system in South Korea. Both knowledge and experience are important things that I am pursuing now for my future carrier as a lecturer. To become a good lecturer I am required to sustainably study because knowledge will always develop along with global development. As the developed country with advanced technology including ship technology, South Korea is the right place to study.

For my doctoral study, I will study and carry out research about the optimization of the ducted propeller with stators. Some studies claimed that this type of propeller is more efficient than conventional ducted propeller that able to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. It is related to the issue of the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI). According to the recent statistic data, international and domestic shipping contributes significantly to carbon dioxide emissions. The issue of carbon dioxide emissions from shipping is more important than those from a highly industrialized country. By optimizing the propeller design the fuel consumption and fuel emissions can be reduced sequentially. I had conducted an initial study about this subject and concluded that the more the number of stators the more efficient the propeller. But I have not known yet the optimum geometry arrangement of the propeller and stators, as well the number of stators. So, I intend to make the design standard for ducted propeller with stators, like the conventional ducted propeller which has the standard measurement of the foils and nozzle. I will make the standard measurement of the foils, nozzle, and stators.

Based on the Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) program scheme, for the first year, I will focus on study Korean language and culture. This is fundamental to be able to blend and communicate with others. Then for the next year that exactly become the first semester of my doctoral study, I will start to discuss my propose subject with my supervisor, focus on the literature studies in order to strengthen my topic background, collect related data, and study the available software related to my subject that might be difference from the software that I usually use. After my proposal is being granted I will focus on conducting research in the laboratory for the remaining semester. I intend to not only carry out a numerical analysis, but also an experimental analysis. Because I think every numerical analysis needs to be validated by the experiment. During my research, I will able to write journals and publish them either on international conferences or reputation journals. I desire to publish at least one journal each semester. I will study and work hard to accomplish and achieve my doctoral’s degree.

Future Plan after Study

After I graduate and achieve my doctoral’s degree I will share the knowledge that I obtained in PNU through my current profession as an associate lecturer in Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), Indonesia. I will also implement the ideal education system of South Korea, as well as share the priceless life experiences there. For a long term plan, I desire to to make joint research, student exchange, and world-class programs between ITS either with PNU or other universities in South Korea. Like the current cooperation between my department at ITS and Mokpo National University (MNU), I really hope ITS will able to make sustainable cooperation with any other universities in South Korea. Moreover, now my department has an international class program. It will be a great opportunity for students to gain knowledge and experience in South Korea.

I believe by studying in South Korea will able to make me be a more open-minded person in any aspect. I always look for better opportunities in my life. Then I will choose the best one for both my career and my life with all of the risks that may offer ahead.
