The ensuring statement of purpose is meant to put forth my aspiration to pursue my career through Masters in Civil Engineering as well as description of my plans subsequent to my graduation. In this ever changing world of Engineering and Technology, passing day makes them obsolete, I want to attain the highest level of education and transcend new scope for research in Civil Engineering. This has always fascinated me and I am keen to continue my academic pursuit in this field.
I have always cherished a dream to become an Engineer, a dream that was innate and developed slowly over the years. Right from my school days I found myself fascinated by the intricacies of mathematics and physics, which spurn the web their web of aura around me, a web that I sought to unravel in countless problem solving sessions I have always felt a strong need for achievement, which has been the motivating force behind whatever I have achieved in my academic career. Civil department staff in my college gave the strong support to my feeling saying that “We the civil engineers build the future in a foundation of excellence”.
My country, India, is on the threshold of hectic development in infrastructure like roads, bridges, highways, expressways etc. India is in a tearing hurry to make up the lost time and catch up with the developed world and achieving better standard of living. Civil engineering will play a major role in changing the face of Indian Panorama. When we go for modern bridges, high rise buildings or ultra-modern condominiums; structural engineering will form the center stage of engineering development. With this in view I had chosen Civil Engineering as my major in college. This gave me the opportunity to thoroughly understand the core engineering values and also gave me a strong technical platform to build upon. My undergraduate years also made me realize the potential I’ve gained to make a real difference to the society. Studying Civil Engineering in a developing country with a high population and limited resources, I came to clearly understand the need for fast infrastructure development while optimizing the available resources. With the growing need in usage of alternate materials in construction and use of concrete with special characteristics in my country, I wish to pursue my career in research in concrete engineering and work with professional groups in high technology companies. This has prompted me to enhance my aim to include a Master’s in Structural Engineering especially in Concrete technology which I believe is tool to achieve my ultimate aim of being a successful structural engineer.
The government of my country has strived hard to develop proper faculties and facilities for performing substantive research but still there exist a dearth of resources which are crucial for carrying out effective research. In a stark contrast to this scenario, I find the facilities in ……………… University quite conducive to proper research work. If I am awarded the chance to pursue my graduate studies in your esteemed university, I would like to work under the supervision of Dr. -------------------- as I find their research interests similar to those of mine.(Propose some research work in accordance with the prof profile).

My ability to pursue thesis work in the above proposed topic can be justified by the projects that I have carried out for the accomplishment of the required thesis work to obtaining a Bachelor’s degree. In regard to my research experience, I have worked under guidance of Prof C.Lakshaman Rao (Department of Applied Mechanics, I.I.T Madras) on the topic “Destructive and Non Destructive testing of concrete”. During this course of work I have gained significant experimental knowledge on characteristics of concrete and its behavior. Seeing my enthusiastic involvement in the project, I was offered to continue research studies in the subsequent semesters on a project titled “Effect of silica fume on concrete”, under the collective guidance of Prof.C.Lakshman Rao and Prof K.Ganesh Babu (Department of Ocean Engineering, I.I.T Madras). As part of the Summer internship Program (2012) at I.I.T Madras, I worked with Prof K.Ganesh Babu on the research topic “Cyclic Wetting and Drying on Normal Concrete and its Effect on Dynamic Shear and Young's Modulus”. The findings of the study where appealing and are currently being reviewed to present in an international conference- “Protect 2013”.
With the knowledge I gained from my academic course curriculum and my practical exposures in my university laboratory on concrete technology along with my above mentioned research experiences, I want to be at the forefront while working with new developments. I sincerely vow to give the best of myself and keep up the expectations.
Finally, I would like to assert that I am highly motivated towards my goal of pursuing graduate studies and once such an opportunity is bestowed upon me, I will try with my whole hearted dedication to live to the high standards set by the university.
