Dear Moderator, I would be really grateful to you if you could help me with my Statement of Purpose which I want to submit for my application to Erasmus Mundus Program, Master Degree course on neuroscience. I will be glad to hear any comments which could help me to organize a stronger letter. Thank a lot in advance.
"The practice of medicine is an art, not a trade; a calling, not a business; a calling in which your heart will be exercised equally with your head” (William Osler).
Absolutely, it is a call of duty of every member of medical community to contribute to the development of medical science as well as to the welfare of humankind altogether. As a future profession, medicine attracted me not only because it gives hope for patients’ bright and healthy future, but also provides medical professionals with truly enriching experience. Indeed, I consider my medical education both here in Uzbekistan and international exchange experience as a very essential part of my life and career development. Under these circumstances, I have chosen neuroscience unhesitatingly, that is one of the most exacting and enormously interesting fields of medicine. Neurosciences obliges person to possess calibers, which I have been developing since my first years at Medical Institute, to be more precise, strong commitment to lifelong learning, enormous diligence, pursuing original ideas and intense motivation for building career in neuroscience as well as vast eagerness for cooperating at international level.
My academic performance has been always excellent, which can be seen from my GPA and academic transcript. Hence, during my seven years studentship at the Medical Institute, I have received numerous awards for my brilliant academic performance. With regard to my scientific background, it should be stated that I have carried out several both collaborative and individual research projects. What is more, I have regularly participated in the “Scientific Conference of Gifted students and Young Researchers” at our Institute with my scientific projects, such as “Some features of apoptosis”, “Usage of nootropic-ozone composition in neurosurgical practice”, in 2007 and 2010 respectively. In relation to my leadership and communicative capabilities, I am leader of my group at institute. Furthermore, I am one of the co-founders of neurology scientific study groups. In fact, I have a flexible attitude, and can work hard both independently and as part of a team. I believe that my communication skills enable me to work constructively with students alike. I greet new challenges and enjoy working with people, and I know how to deal with any conflicts that may arise. I am also eager to learn new things so reading is an important part of my day. I also actively participate in volunteer works, as a nurse boy during my summer vacations in Republican Centre of Emergency. For instance, last year I served to the 10-15 patients daily, during one month (August, 2011) by providing patients with intensive care. Since my early years in the medical school I have matured interest toward the neuroscience and particularly neurodegenerative diseases dazzled me a lot, because they are still incurable and the number of people suffering from these illnesses is soaring. Their importance is increasing with the ageing of people, becoming a crucial global problem. To this extent, I have always considered as my major aim tackling neurodegenerative diseases thus represent a formidable challenge for our ageing society. So, my immense curiosity toward the neuroscience kindled me to win a scholarship and to visit the Netherlands in order to participate in the International Summer School on Translational Neurosciences, in 2011, where I was privileged to hear the lectures by leading neuroscientists of the Medical Faculty, Groningen University, in various problems of the field, such as neuromuscular diseases, multiple sclerosis, cerebral vascular diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, and list goes on. (Certificate of participation is attached to the “Other” section of my online application). This very course nourished me with plenty both theoretical and practical experience due to its intensity and richness. Apart from that, I got a chance to establish a myriad of scientific networks with leading neuroscientists of the Groningen University, namely Prof. H.P.H. Kremer as well as with an ample of students interested in neuroscience from different parts of the world. In these days, I am looking forward to carry on my education by seeking my Master degree through Erasmus Mundus Program, Marco XXI project, in the University of Gottingen with the aim of exposing myself to the epitome of community of neuroscientist.
Needless to say that Uzbekistan’s neuroscience is thirsty for a top-notch, result-oriented new breed of researchers so as to configure an original, highly productive and internationally collaborative research programs for the identification of possible reasons and treatment of neurological diseases. Particularly, if we could prevent or diagnose neurological diseases in early stages, undeniably, we would be able to re-allocate the funds spent on these diseases for scientific research of other backward fields of medicine. Bearing these factors in mind, I am really concerned about the blanks regarding neurological diseases as a medical student, a future researcher, a clinician and a member of medical community as well. From this point of view, it is extremely useful as well as interesting to cross conventional bounds and acquire new knowledge from renowned neuroscientists while earning European Master in Neuroscience in the University of the Enlightenment. Consequently, due to my participation in this Master degree Program a sheer number of international networks and partnerships with Uzbekistan’s Universities will be expanded, which in turn will be tremendously useful in future theoretical and practical relationships between our scientific communities and diverse international educational institutions. This Master degree Program will be an excellent practice for deeper exploration of European medical experience and exchanging views on neuroscience’s global issues, especially on the problems of common neurological pathologies at international scale. As well as that, I am eager to boost my knowledge regarding a range of neurological diseases and to find out myriad aspects of neuroscience, which are still dark for me. In the years ahead, all knowledge and skills acquired during the two years Master Course at the University of Gottingen, I will utilize at the avant-garde of neuroscience while solving real medical problems on early diagnosing and effective treatment of neurological diseases. These days, neuroscientists of Uzbekistan striving to resolve the problems of neuroscience, but still we have deficiency of practice in that field, precisely more international experience is needed. Therefore, the aim of my participation is to attack the major neurological problems in Uzbekistan by carrying out researches and taking advantage of the latest science and possibilities for international collaboration, which as a result will contribute the development of neuroscience. After that I can share my experiences and applied knowledge with students. Additionally, in perspective, seeking Master degree in Germany through Marco XXI project will prepare me for representing Uzbekistan with dignity in the world arenas with highly accomplished research programs. Moreover, during Master Program I hope to improve my abilities such as analytical thinking, scientific evaluation of accumulated information, testing hypotheses and formulating ideas as well as technical scientific research skills. In addition, this precious experience will supplement my existing knowledge with valuable practical and applied training, and enable me to discuss research in-depth with leading experts in neuroscience. I am also waiting from the Master Program to gain a better comprehension of versatile scientific techniques harnessed in neuroscience. On the top of that, my Master in Neuroscience will increase my chances in future career, because today in an increasingly competitive global job market, employers value graduates with study abroad experience, who have proved that they can succeed and function in a diverse environment. I also hope to attain an understanding and appreciation of the major research questions currently under investigation regarding neurological diseases, as well as the novel approaches being used within the Gottingen University’s research groups. It is also hard to deny that Master Course at Gottingen University will provide contact with researchers in the field of neuroscience and offer access to facilities and materials which are not available where I am currently studying. Beyond these obvious aspects, there is a further subtle point, which we must take into account, that this program will provide a unique opportunity for us, participant students, to work side by side with leading researchers in a dynamic and inspiring scientific environment. Another equally significant advantage of this international experience is a really great practice of lab work at a brilliant institutes working alongside with a scientifically stimulating group of students and share knowledge with them. From the point of view of globalization, a Master degree in Germany will enable me to gain a deeper understanding of another culture, make lifelong friends from a wide variety of backgrounds and benefit from an experience that is truly once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Last but not least, this unique opportunity will foster me to get ready for the future independent research projects and will provide an excellent preparation for my subsequent pursuing a PhD on neuroscience.
At the very last, I kindly request you to give me a chance to accomplish a neuroscience Master degree in the Georg-August-Universität, because it is a grandiose opportunity for me, as a future neuroscientist, to make improvements in my education, to further my lab training in more advanced methods and to attain new research capabilities. Besides, I get a feeling of content from helping other people. So, I feel I need this scholarship to enhance my knowledge and to use this advanced education to battle challenging branches of neuroscience in order to promote healthy life of community. Therefore, I want to be both researcher and clinician who perform works on neurodegenerative diseases, which leads to the new drugs, to reduce effects of these diseases.
I will do all my best for the great future of my motherland and global well-being by sharing the experience as well as knowledge acquired during the Master Program in Neuroscience in the University of Gottingen. I strongly believe that my participation in this program will help to shape the new era in prevention, early diagnosing and treatment of neurological diseases, while broadening my own career horizons. Dear committee members, I am really enthusiastic about participation in the competition for the scholarship. I am also very grateful to you for taking the time to consider my application and I hope that I may look forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours faithfully
