Letter of Interest

I had the opportunity of working at the Heart to Heart (H2H) HIV/AIDS Center, Federal Medical Centre, Owerri. It was while working there, that I had the most compelling experience which triggered my interest in the prevention and management of HIV/AIDS.

It was my first week in H2H, and it was routine as usual. It was later in the day she came in. She was the next one on the queue, she came in and sat quietly and didn’t even offer a greeting. No one paid particular attention to her, her drug was being dispensed by one of the pharmacist, another was entering her details into the books, since it was my first week, I was assigned nothing to do and was told to just observe how things were done.

I noticed her drug chart was very light, I picked it up and flipped through it, that was when I observed that, that was her first visit to the pharmacy department of the H2H clinic.

So I looked up at her, really observing her, trying to deduce what was going through her mind. She was a young lady, dark skinned, possibly in her late twenties. She was lost in thoughts, staring out the window so I could only see her profile and she didn’t even make a sound, as the tears streaked down her cheeks, like she wasn’t even aware that she was crying.

That was my first reality brush with the agony that follows the positive stamp on a HIV test.

The chief pharmacist tried his best to assure her that HIV was no longer a death sentence, but that when properly managed, people do live long healthy life, but at that time, she was not listening to anybody, as she had broken down into heart-wrenching sobs.

We had to escort her back to the counselling room.

I would really appreciate an avenue to exploit the travails/burden HIV/AIDS poses on the community and also contribute to the triumphs in controlling the spread of the infection.

Given the opportunity to work with your organisation, I hope to learn the following;

· Strategies to improve the quality of life of an HIV patient,

· Accessibility of drug treatment to individuals living in remote and rural areas

· Strategies to increase awareness of HIV prevention and spread amongst individuals at risk

· How to overcome the fear and stigma associated with HIV/AIDS

· Managing accidental exposure in health workers

· Understanding HIV in pregnancy

· Identifying the gaps and barriers that obstruct the provision and access to HIV services

I understand that to be eligible to work with AIDS Prevention Initiative in Nigeria, the individual should have keen knowledge on antiretrovirals and should be a self starter who must be able to work with little supervision. I possess these attributes, -as I have been opportune to give a presentation on “The Management of HIV/AIDS” and was also commended as “The Most Teachable Intern (Mar 2010-Feb2011)” by the Director of Pharmacy, Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Lagos.

I would appreciate an opportunity to interview with you and demonstrate to you first hand that I am such a professional that would contribute positively towards achieving the mission of the organisation.

I have also attached my resume for your perusal. Thank you for your time and consideration
