State vs Country

Can someone, please, explain to me the difference in meaning of these two words, if there is any? When to use "state", and when "country"? Is it a difference between British and American English? In my native language we only have one word for that, so that's why it's confusing me. And, if I may ask another question related to this, why is the word "country" used to mean "rural area"?
