State of the union

Hi, I just learned this phrase "state of the union" today.

I googled it and now know it is an address by president, but

I would like to know what each word of this phrase means.

Does "state" mean the state in "the United States"? Like.. Texas, New York..

or the state in "state of mind", or anything else?

Also, does "union" mean Union in the corporate, such as a group of employees

or anything else?

Thank you for your help in advance!
