Dozens of striking film and TV writers are negotiating with venture capitalists to set up companies that would bypass the Hollywood studio system and reach consumers with video entertainment on the Web.

At least seven groups, composed of members of the striking Writers Guild of America, are planning to form Internet-based businesses that, if successful, could create an alternative economic model to the one at the heart of the walkout, now in its seventh week.

Good article. Venture dough is back on the web, so what? The writers are gonna do what? Continue making shows that cost $50,000 a minute? Slum and get Reality crews to shoot it for $1,000 a minute? Ok, I know there is huge venture dough flying around the net again. Whats the business model for an online studio look like? How are they gonna monetize without slashing their salaries and budgets? Or are they gonna shoot $100 million dollar movies and expect to recoup costs and marketing by selling tickets and over priced grain in a cup.

Here is how its gonna go down. The writer nerds will make something nerdy that other nerds will like. But that wont be enough to satisfy the Ventures. So they will research and find out that they need a hot chick. They'll find out she has to get naked. Then they will find out that she will need to have *** with a fraternity and a dwarf.

Ive had this very discussion 2 times this week with Producers and venture investors. They want to know how to make money. Its still ****. The Hollywood nerds are alot smarter and greedier than I am, so Im not saying they wont figure out a way. I dont pay for ****, so I cant see myself giving up my credit card to see a short film, or a comedy series, or whatever, unless it was personal and I knew the people doing it.
Oh no doubt its gonna happen. I dont doubt that. Im just wondering what these people in this article are thinking about right now. Im thinking there are 3 ways to make money online with a video camera, if you dont want to show cootchie. The first is to find chicks that are so hot some desperate nerds may fall in love with them and pay money for anything. Ringtones, Calanders, DVD's and subscrition premium content. Boring. My creativity is Better than that. The next is be really funny, and thats a slim chance. Its easy to go viral, but nobody is paying to see must-see-videos for a laugh. Finally, Gore. Give the kids what hollywood wont. Drag out the buckets of fake blood and the latex. Throw on some scary music. Its gonna have to be Web
2.0ish, interactive. Gotta figure out a way to engage and include theviewer into the experience.
We'll see. Any of you feeling ready, Ive got all the gear. I got a few months off for the first time in 3 years. All the back burner projects are back on warm. Weller, lets continue the Filmmaker project. Everybody else. Now is the time. It aint just Lonestar and Duckless Macarthur saying it any more. Its the LA Times now. Pfftt.
