Personally, I've been viewing it as a coordinating conjunction. I seem to always be correcting student's sentences--combing their independent clauses, but I think my corrections may be unnecessary.
After reading this article, I think I need to stop making these corrections!

But Examples:
1. I don' like to study. But I must study.
I've been changingto : I don't like to study, but I must study.
2. Table tennis is interesting. But it is very hard.
Table tennis is interesting, but it is very hard.
So examples:
1. I'm not good at it. So I want to study more.
I'm not good at it, so I want to study more.
2. Walt Disney was a great person. So I respect him.
Walt Disney was a great person, so I respect him.
Because Examples:
1. My dream is to be an English teacher. Because I like English and children.
My dream is to be an English teacher because I like English and children.
2. My favorite animal is the cat. Because they are cute and small
My favorite animal is the cat because they are cute and small.
And Examples:
1. I played tennis today. And I was so tired.
I played tennis today, and I was so tired.
2. To play a sport is exciting. And I can enjoy it with my friends.
To play a sport is exciting, and I can enjoy it with my friends.
