Starting sentence with And, But, So, Because in Japan

Personally, I've been viewing it as a coordinating conjunction. I seem to always be correcting student's sentences--combing their independent clauses, but I think my corrections may be unnecessary.

After reading this article, I think I need to stop making these corrections! http://www.michbar.org/journal/article.cfm?articleID=628&volumeID=48
However, in my defense, there's a nice element to coordinating two independent clauses--it makes a strong connection, but students have enough to learn...so if they don't need to correct these sentences, that's one less thing.

But Examples:
1. I don' like to study. But I must study.
I've been changingto : I don't like to study, but I must study.
2. Table tennis is interesting. But it is very hard.
Table tennis is interesting, but it is very hard.

So examples:
1. I'm not good at it. So I want to study more.
I'm not good at it, so I want to study more.
2. Walt Disney was a great person. So I respect him.
Walt Disney was a great person, so I respect him.

Because Examples:
1. My dream is to be an English teacher. Because I like English and children.
My dream is to be an English teacher because I like English and children.
2. My favorite animal is the cat. Because they are cute and small
My favorite animal is the cat because they are cute and small.

And Examples:
1. I played tennis today. And I was so tired.
I played tennis today, and I was so tired.
2. To play a sport is exciting. And I can enjoy it with my friends.
To play a sport is exciting, and I can enjoy it with my friends.

Thanks,
Chris

Plese refer to the description of using conjunctions in THIS LINK I did some analysis of articles in recent major newpapers, such as the Washington Post and Financial Times and found many examples of sentences beginning with the words "and" and "but". Because is a subordinating conjunction. I would not use it to introduce a main clause.

The fact is that ESL/EFL students are not native writers, and most native writers are not good writers. Sure, coordinating conjunctions can begin a sentence-- but not the sentences most students write.

Unless you can figure out how to explain to students of that level when to and when not to, then you are better off teaching them compound sentences. I have precisely the same prob
