Starting sentence with a date

Is is incorrect to begin a sentence with a date without using "on"

Jan 10, 2011, Matin went....

or

On Jan 10, 2011, Matin went...

I cannot find the answer

Hi, You need 'on' in your example. But you could say eg January 10, 2011, was a cold day. Clive
