Starting a sentence with instead? Comma/semicolon

Is it ok to start a sentence with 'instead'? Is a '.' or a ';' more appropriate here?

The presents should not be hidden in the living room. Instead they should be hidden upstairs behind the biggest cupboard in Landon's room.

You can start a sentence with any word at all in the right context – even 'and' or 'but'.
