Starting a sentence with But or And

Is it OK to start a sentence with But or And? Is it grammatically correct and aesthetically OK?

How about "So"?

Ex: So how do we do we go about doing it?

Ex: So we went there.

Do we need a comma after the "So" in the first example?

Thanks
