start V-ing or start to V?

1. Yesterday I caught my girlfriend going out with her ex. Suddenly I flew into a rage and started to punch him in the face/started punching him in the face.

2. My brother hit the little girl, and she started to cry/ started crying.

3. Your room is so messy! You better start cleaning it up/ start to clean it up right now.

Which once is correct? Any difference between start V-ing and start to V?

Could you please give me some examples?

Many thanks!!!

Both are correct. There is no difference. However, stylistically, if start is used in a progressive tense, it will sound awkward to use a second -ing form right after it, as in It was starting raining .

  • Here It was starting to rain is the much preferred form.
