Dear Teachers,
1. They often suck up to her.
- Is this natural? and this means "They often butter her up", right?
2. Peter is still a virgin.
- I think "virgin" is used only for women, right?
3. I hope that starts you off on somewhere.
- What does "start you off on somewhere" mean?
4. It's almost pointless to try to figure out what goes on in their minds sometimes.
- "it's almost pointless" here means "it's almost impossible", right?

- I think "virgin" is used only for women, right? Technically, I think you are correct. We do use it for men as well, however.

It's almost pointless to try to figure out what goes on in their minds sometimes.
- "it's almost pointless" here means "it's almost impossible", right? I'd take it here as meaning more exactly that there is almost no reason to try, presumably because they are not doing anything that makes sense.
