Stare fixedly

John is still driving on the highway. He passes several people lying dead at the side of the road. He stares fixedly ahead.

Hi. Is 'stares fixedly ahead' a fitting expression to use in the context above to describe that he's forcing himself not to see and think of the dead people even though it's hard?
