Standing firm & digging in

Is it correct to say that "standing firm" and "digging in" are synonyms?

If not, when should I use each of them?

Would you please give me a couple of examples?

Thank you

These are synonymous - meaning "not wavering" - but "digging in" would have to be used with "his heels," for example: He was standing firm/digging in his heels in his belief that his methods would eventually prove successful. He was digging in his heels/standing firm, refusing to budge an inch on his position.
