standard or expectation

How can I say this so that it is natural and correct?

If you build it up to such a standanrd/expectation in your head, you could only be disappointed.

Thanks

I'm trying to say: build something up, like a country
If you build England up to such standards/expectations, you might be disappointed.

Do you know what I mean?

It's not natural-sounding. Try to say it another way.

It's the expectations that you build up, not the country.

The word 'standards' does not seem suitable for your meaning at all.
