I found a strange sounding phrase:

The usage of "
stand" suggests an act of physically standing. Some dictionaries have this sense too. But Is this sense of "
stand" forced upon it and not generally used in other contexts, because the alternative, but more grammatical, way of rewriting the phrase:
"the act of
standing in the schoolhouse door"
is unwieldy?
