Stand for/precious

Hi

1. Human relationships have a tendency to crumble - marriages, families, friendships, it just seems there is a certain entropy that you can give in to which you shouldn't. And when you don't, you stand for that. And that's a lot to stand for.

---- I understand that when you don't give in to entropy, you do what? I don't get that part?

2. John is unsung hero. On a musical level, he's got real insight, but he's not precious about what he does.

--- Does that mean "sophisticated" or maybe "fastidious"? I'm asking about "precious"

  • My best guess is that if you don't give in to entropy you stand for "marriages, families, friendships" Newguest --- Does that mean "sophisticated" or maybe "fastidious"?
  • I'm asking about "precious" I'm afraid this makes even less sense that the first passage.

Hi,
2. John is unsung hero. On a musical level, he's got real insight, but he's not precious about what he does.

The meaning here seems to be what my dictionary terms 'affectedly refined, especially in language or manner'.

If John were 'precious' about his musical talent, he would go around saying to other people, in words or just by his body language, "look at me

Hi

In other words he's not boasting about his talents, I guess.

cheers

Hi,
Being precious is not really 'boasting'.

It's more a matter of exaggerating the display of one's talents in order to draw attention to them.

Best wishes, Clive

I have to admit, I was completely unaware of this meaning of "precious." It definitely has the feel of a BrE usage.

I would have used "pretentious" instead of "precious". Seems like "precious" is a stretch and force-fit, unless there is some new slang use of the word that has recently emerged.
