Stand by Me

Ben E. King's Stand by Me is a famous song.
I cannot quote the lyrics here due to copyright problems, but I would like to ask a question related to this song.
The word "darling" is used in this song.
I think this "darling" means someone of the opposite sex you love.
A person I know insists that "darling" means "fellow" in the context of the lyrics and can be used by boys.
I believe this person is apparently influenced by the story of the movie entitled Stand by Me.

What do you think?

I think in this song the word darlin' simply means a person who is very dear to another. It doesn't necessarily have to be someone of the opposite ***, just someone who will stand by you and support you when difficult times come. I haven't seen the movie, so I can't comment on how the word is used there.

I haven't seen the movie, but I have always simply assumed that the song was addressed to a woman. I would never address another man as "darling".

I agree. That is the assumption that almost everyone would make. It is highly unlikely that it means anything like "fellow".
