Stand

Hi,

1. The flowerpot had stood on the windowsill for two years before the accident.

2.The flowerpot had been standing on the windowsill for two years before the accident.

Would u pls tell me the differencces between these two sentences? Actually I was wondering if the second sentence is true or not as I,m not sure that stand in this context as an active or state verb.
