"Stand"

What does stand mean here?

"Lang began to go out on to the street at every chance she could get. She has said: 'I'd begun to get a much firmer grip on the things I really wanted to in my work. This photograph of the man with his head on his arms, for instance- five years earlier, I would have thought it enough to take a picture of a man, no more. But now, I wanted to take a picture of a man as he stood in the world- in this case, a man with his head down, with his back against the wall...' "

I got that the photographer thought completely different in earlier years and now her point of view has changed. I just could't get the meaning of stand in the world.
