stall vs break down

Could you please explain the difference between these two verbs to declare a defection? stall vs break down

I heard stall more about an engine, that maybe it'll work a minute onward or maybe not, whereas break down is the state of a major defection that probably need to be repaired. However, I used Google Images and by reviewing titles, I found out that stall can be used in major defections too.
