Stakes

"The stakes for organized interest groups are small, or the legal system is poorly designed so that corruption is widespread"

In the sentence above, the meaning of stakes is unclear to me. As far as I know, stake means either a wood post with pointed end or the money on the gamble table. Is it okay for me to understand the meaning of stakes as 'interest', 'profit' 'what they get', taking the meaning of stake as gamble money?

Thank you

I found the Norwegian report this is from, composed and published in "English" (there's those scare quotes). Here is the list of authors: Farideh Ramjerdi, Rune Elvik, Petter Christiansen, Jonas Eliasson, Oddgeir Osland, Hege Westskog. How many of those have English as a first language?

  • I'm betting none.
  • That's how the report reads, anyway.

Stake here has the meaning of "a share or interest in a business, situation, or system".

The more a particular policy will affect the interests of a group, the harder they will try to persuade politicians to do what benefits them and not do what will harm them.
