stairs and steps

Hello everyone. Is there any difference between stairs and steps?

stairs and house steps?

Top answer

Inside a building, the structure that allows one to climb up or down from one floor to another is pretty much always "stairs". Outside a building, "steps" is more usual, especially for short flights, but "stairs" can be also used for long flights. "steps" can also be also used inside a building for short flights.

Also, I have never heard 'stair' in the singular, while a single 'step' is common.
