Sshort-circuit

Hi.
In:
"As stress build, thinking becomes clouded and nerves start to fray./some players short-circuit altogether, [...]"
from Play Winning Chess, by Yasser Seirawan and Jeremy Silman,

May I replace short circuit with 'become attected'?

Thanks in advance

build s attected? Do you mean 'affected'? The term 'short-circuit' is much stronger, more extreme.

Maybe he can't think straight.
Maybe he has a nervous breakdown.
Maybe he just can't cope with the stress.

It's a colourful expression, but not a precise one.
