squirting/ran out

There was a leak in one of the pipes and water was squirting out all over the kitchen floor.

Can I replace "squirting out" with "ran out" in this sentence without any change in the meaning?

Top answer

If it is squirting out, it is coming out with pressure. The water will not simply drip or run on the floor, but go some distance horizontally (or perhaps vertically) first.
