Vocabulary

Squire, page, servant, attendant

Hi,

Below are a paragraph from a novel. Several kinds of people appear. I find it very difficult to translate them into my language. Can you shed some light on their meaning?

Knights and their ladies were strolling casually into the great hall, laughing and conversing warmly with each other. Squires and pages called to each other, and children laughed and chattered happily. Ladies-in-waiting exchanged greetings with members of the castle staff while servants and scullions hurried here and there, filling goblets and bearing platters of food. Attendants and pages stood at attention along the walls.

1) Do squire and page serve under the knights ? Are the children referring to the pages, since pages are very young?
2) who are the members of the castle staff?
3) sevants, unlike the squire or page, have nothing to do with the protection of the castle. Is that right?
4) what is the difference between attendant and servant?

Thank you.
