Harris to Dravid, no run, That has spun a mile, pitched way outside leg, hit a sand trap and gripped past the groping bat of Dravid, he was squared up as the ball narrowly missed the off stump, Dravid looks puzzled, the Proteas' fielders can't believe it.

Please explain to me the highlighted parts in the paragraph.

Hi, Cricket commentators have their own jargon, wwhich I don't really know. But here's what I think. gripped past - I think he said ' r ipped past', meaning the ball went past the bat at a very fast speed.

gripped past - I think he said 'ripped past', meaning the ball went past the bat at a very fast speed.
