Spun to a stop

Hi

Five minutes later the truck raced off the road and into a clearing, where it spun to a stop in a swirl of dirt and ripped-up grass.

Does it mean that when the driver hit the brakes the whole car rotated?

I understand that "ripped-up grass" it's just a piece of soil without a grass, but I'm not sure about a "swirl" of dirt?

When the truck left the road it turned in a circular movement very quickly. This action ripped up the grass and dirt into a cloud following the trajectory of the truck.

Hi

You wrote that it turned in a circular movement.

In the text it says that it "stopped", so I understand that when the driver hit the brakes the car turned in a circular movement and ripped the grass and dirt?

Yes that is right. The wheels of the truck, moving sideways, whilst the truck was in a spin would have ripped up the grass and dirt.
