Spread his hands

Hi

Is the use of "spread one's hand" in the sense of begging OK here? Any other typical phrase?

He is not interested in doing work at all, but he is always ready to spread his hand in front of his uncle. What a shame!

Thanks,

Tom

More usual would be something like He's always ready to go to his uncle with his hand (held) out.
