Why has sprung been used in the following sentence?
The boat sprung a leak.
Shouldn't be there sprang?

No, it should not necessarily be "sprang". Both the Oxford dictionary (BrE) and the Merriam-Webster dictionary (AmE) give both "sprang" and "sprung" as correct for the past tense of "spring".
