Spotting errors

If I knew that my friend had planned to visit the town today, I would have made his stay comfortable.

There is no error in the above sentence according to my book.

Shouldn't we use 'If I had known' in place of 'If I knew'?

I think both "If I knew..." and "If I had known..." are correct in that situation. I think when we're dealing with verbs, such as 'know' or 'have' (in the sense of 'possess something'), we could use either "If + past perfect" OR "If + past simple".

In your case, "If I knew" could also me

It's OK, but not quite sensible time-wise. There is discord between "today" and the past time frame.

If I knew that my friend had planned to visit the town today, I would have made prior arrangements so his stay would be comfortable.
