Spotting errors

The last of the Mughal emperors of India was imprisoned and was later sent into exile by the kiwis.

My book says:- it should be ' Mughal emperors of India was imprisoned and later....' 

I am not sure why they have omitted 'was' before 'later'.

Please assist.
