Cross Trainer is commonly used.

I hear elliptical machine (for work-outs?)

The start of a soccer game is with a "kick-off". Tennis and Volleyball are more commonly called "the serve", service is used as well.

Football starts with a kick-off. Badminton with a serve. Someone else will have to answer the others.

In American football, each play starts with a "snap" except for the first play of the half or after one team score, when they have a kick off.

1. The term "cross-trainer" is used in the US for the type of athletic shoe that can be used for any sport. I have two pairs of cross-trainers, one high-cut and one low-cut, and I consider them the absolute best type of athletic shoe you can buy. Why even bother with one type of shoe for running, one for tennis, one for basketball, etc., when a cross-trainer with do it all, and do it better? However, cross-trainers, despite their advantages, don't seem to be very popular in the US. In the US, basketball players want a basketball shoe, tennis players a tennis shoe, runners running shoes, etc.

2. The term "elliptical trainer" in the US means a type of treadmill. I've never heard it applied to a type of athletic shoe.

3. American-style football begins with a "kickoff." Basketball with a "center jump ball." Rugby and badminton are rare in the US, and I don't know the terms. Water polo is popular in the US, but is a rather esoteric sport, and I don't know the terms.
