Hi there,

(1) What is the AmEng for the BrEng cross-trainer (= a type of shoe that can be worn for playing different types of sports)?

(2) I understand elliptical trainer and cross-trainer (AmEng) mean exactly the same thing?
Which of the terms is common in AmEng?

(3) There is
face-off in ice hockey (?)
throw-in in soccer (?)
service in (either) tennis and volleyball (?)

What do you call similar "actions" in other sports (eg, American football, rugby, badminton, etc etc)?

What do you call the starting "struggle for the ball" ( which of the teams "wins" the ball in the center of the pool once the game starts?) in water polo?

1. The term "cross-trainer" is used in the US for the type of athletic shoe that can be used for any sport. I have two pairs of cross-trainers, one high-cut and one low-cut, and I consider them the absolute best type of athletic shoe you can buy. Why even bother with one type of shoe for running, one for tennis, one for basketball, etc., when a cross-trainer with do it all, and do it better? H
