Sports and the Gerund

Hi Teachers,

In terms of sport do we always use the gerund?

What do they do on Sunday morning?

They go jogging.

They go swimming.

They go riding.

What about this one? A is the correct one, isn't it?

a) They play football.

b) They go playing football.

Is this true: The word "go" + sports or recreational activities usually take a gerund.

I guess there may be exceptions. I'm saying it just because of the adverbs 'usually' in the above sentence.

Thanks in advance

You are right. As you say, there are plenty of exceptions:

'They do judo.'

'They play snooker/cricket/tennis.'
