Spoon vs spoonful

Hi,
I am wondering if the words 'spoon' and 'spoonful' can both be used in sentences of this type:
'Add two spoons/spoonfuls of sugar'

I was once corrected by a native speaker (BrE) who told me that only the latter is possible, but all the same I've been hearing both the forms in use.

Thank you in advance

Yes, you can use either. Many native speakers are unaware of forms used outside their own regions.
