Thanks, Vorpar. One more question. When a person says, "We're separated". What does it really mean?

That sounds more like a marriage that is almost over. They haven't gotten divorced yet, but they are literally separated: living in separate places.

Thanks, Vorpar. Can I call it a breakup?

I suppose it could be called a break-up, but I wouldn't use that term until the divorce is final.

If there isn't a marriage, I would definitely use break-up rather than separation.
