Splitting phrasal verbs

Hi Everyone,

The rule is that if a phrasal verb is transitive, then we can split it:

wake up - Julie tried to wake her daughter up.

If it's intransitive, then we can't:

When did she wake up?

My question is this:

Should the words that do the splitting, such as nouns, pronouns and possessive adjectives be the only words that deem a phrasal verb as being able to be split, or do adverbs also count?

Thanks,

CC Emotion: smile
