Split my sides laughing

Hi teachers,

I found this post and it mentioned the sentence is a little odd because you'd be laughing and wouldn't be able to speak.

I'm splitting my sides laughing.

So doesn't that mean "I was splitting my sides laughing" would be natural?

Thanks

TN

It would be considered odd only by someone who was taking the sentence extremely literally. I don't find it odd at all.
