'Spin a yarn'

Hi, does anyone know what 'spin a yarn' means?
I can't seem to find the aforementioned phrase online(on the MW webpage); My Oxford dictionary, though, defines the phrase as 'telling stories about roaring adventures'.

It can mean to create an exciting 'real life' story. More often it is used to show that someone is creating an elaborate untruth/lying in a complex way.
