Vocabulary

spike

Hi,

I found this on the google books search and want to ask you how one knows the word 'spike' is a verb, as it seems here, when all my dictionaries say it is only a noun? I have encountered some words not listed in dictionaries in its functional terms (?) and want to ask you where I can go to check the use's validity.
