Speech & Pronunciation

sphere: sf or sv

How to read sphere?

A /sfie/

B /svie/

C Either way: no difference can be detected by the ears.

Thanks in advance.

The first one, except the last phoneme would be schwa sound. At least in BrE, that is. I'd guess in AE the difference would be that /r/ is pronounced at the end, and perhaps schwa would be just /i/.

  • So in AE /sfir/, but do notice that I'm not sure about the American way.
